Authorship in Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science
In these fields, most papers use the convention that the co-authors are listed in alphabetical order, the so-called Hardy-Littlewood Rule (wikipedia article of academic authorship). For Mathematics, this usage is described in the "Information Statements on the Culture of Research and Scholarship in Mathematics" section of the American Mathematical Society website, specifically the 2004 statement: AMS statement of the Culture of Research and Scholarship in Mathematics
